The Journal of the Engineers' Club of St. Louis, Sept 1955, Roster Issue - Published in 1955 |

Unknown |
Publisher |
Engineer's Club |
City |
St. Louis |
County |
Missouri |
State |
Missouri |
Price |
$5.00 (plus $3.50 postage and handling) |
Notes: This 286 page book celebrates the 87th Anniversary Year of the Engineer's Club of St. Louis, MO. It has small photos. job titles, company name and address, plus residence address and phone of engineers who belong to this Club. I also found the list of club officers from 1868-1955 interesting reading. There are many familiar names from St. Louis. There are also a series of pages listing Members Occupational Affiliations which list names of companies and all the members that work there.
Some of the companies in the list are the following: Frank Adam Electric Co., Alemite Co. of St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch Inc., Atlas Construction, Atlas Iron Works, Bachman Machine Co., Becker-Marsden, Marcel Boulicault Architects, Bussen Quarries, Capen Belting & Rubber Co., Ceco Steel Products, Consulting Engineers, Columbia Iron Works, Eichler Company, Emerson Electric, Fruin-Colnon Contracting Co., Goltermann Materials, Gorham Construction, Granco Steel Products, Iffrig Equipment Co., and many more.
I was surprised at the number of architects and attorneys listed in the book. The last page also lists the advertisers for the book. The old ads are very different from what we see today.
The Engineers' Club of St. Louis, organized on December 2, 1868, is the third oldest engineering society in America. In addition to Professional Engineers, its membership includes architects, executives and business administrators, as well as men and women in the technical, scientific, educational, marketing and legal fields. The Engineers' Club facility on 4359 Lindell Blvd is home to over 950 club members and, through the services of the Engineering Center, to over 50 affiliated Professional Societies, representing over 14,000 members. The Club is a nonsectarian, nonpolitical, and nonprofit society whose objectives and purposes are to promote the educational and professional improvement of its members, to advance the field of engineering in its several branches, to make available to the general public technical and scientific information and knowledge, and generally to aid in the solution of public questions involving engineering and scientific problems…(from its website 2008).

Missouri |
State |

Notes: In 1914, Art Hill in Forest Park was the scene of an elaborate celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of St. Louis.
It took the form of a review of the city's history called The Pageant and Masque of St. Louis.
Viewed by audiences of more than 100,000 persons nightly, it used all of Art Hill as an open-air theater. (shown above). The production ran for four evenings, from May 28 through June 1, 1914.
It was played by a cast of 7,500 upon a vast stage that was built over the Grand Lagoon at the base of Art Hill. The pageant depicted the story of the city's early years, beginning with the Mound Builders and concluding with the end of the Civil War.
Beginning at twilight, it lasted two hours and, after an intermission, the nocturnal performance of the Masque took place under artistic illumination. This was a symbolic presentation which interpreted the relationships of St. Louis to the life of America and humanity. While not in the category of light entertainment, newspapers said, "the performances held the great audiences spellbound with interest and awe."
Organization of this successful theatrical and musical enterprise required more than a year's preparation by the Pageant Drame Association of local civic leaders.
Ultimately, the founding of the Municipal Opera can be indirectly attributed to the 1914 event. |
